Wildcats fall to Cadillac

CADILLAC–The Alpena boys basketball team lost against Cadillac on Friday, 57-32.

After the first quarter, Alpena held an early lead 16-7, but was unable to score in the second quarter. Cadillac gained the lead 22-16 at halftime and kept it after the third quarter, 38-27.

Aidan Goike and Chris Derocher led Alpena on the scoreboard, with ten and nine points respectively.

“We had a really good first quarter, followed by probably the three worst quarters of the season,” Alpena coach John Pintar said. “We can’t win on the road when we don’t score in a quarter. We struggled the rest of the game.”

Alpena’s junior varsity team didn’t fare much better, losing 42-39. The Wildcats’ leading scorers were Kayden Wisniewski with 11 points and Hadyn Goebel with ten.

Alpena’s freshman team was able to secure the win 44-43. Kelly Stark led Alpena with 15 points, and Jordan Schultz was not far behind at 13 points for the game.

Alpena (6-8) plays in Cheboygan on Tuesday.

Hillman 69, W-P 48

WHITTEMORE–The Hillman boys basketball team won in a tough game Friday against Whittemore-Prescott, 69-48.

Hillman was able to get off to a quick 10-0 lead in the first few minutes of the game and led 18-13 at the end of the first quarter.

Whittemore-Prescott fought back in the second quarter and was up by one point at the half, 29-28. Hillman tied the score in the third quarter 42-42, but was able to outscore Whittemore in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

“The boys played with the hearts of champions tonight. It was an awesome effort,” Hillman coach Eric Muszynski said. “I’m very proud of the team. We really pulled one out on a tough road game.”

Hillman’s Brandon Banks scored 14 points in the second half after coming off an injury in the first half. Other leading scorers for Hillman were Gunnar Libby with 14 points, Kory Henigan with 14 points, Chris Whittman with ten points, and Andrew Funk with eight points.

Whittemore-Prescott’s leading scorers were Shawn Edmonds with 20 points and Kyle Colt with 17.

Hillman (12-0, 8-0 North Star League) hosts Mio on Tuesday for Parent’s Night.

Onaway 65,

Central Lake 55

CENTRAL LAKE–The Onaway boys basketball team won against Central Lake Friday 65-55. The teams were tied at the end of the first quarter 10-10. At halftime, Onaway was up 27-18. By the end of the third quarter, Onaway extended its lead, 45-39.

The leading scorers for Onaway were Keaton Brewer with 27 points, Trevor Wregglesworth with 11, Cody Cruse with nine, and Cody Neelis with seven.

Central Lake’s leading scorer was Brett Dewey with 15 points.

“I thought we did a good job working the ball around,” Onaway coach Eddy Szymoniak said. “Keaton dominated down low, but we got everybody in tonight. We hit some shots and shots were falling.”

Onaway (5-6) hosts Pickford on Monday.

Rogers City 67, Oscoda 49

OSCODA–The Rogers City boys basketball team won against Oscoda Friday, 67-49.

After the first quarter, Rogers City led 22-17. At the half, Rogers City was up 37-26. After the third quarter, Rogers City was leading 46-34.

Rogers City’s leading scorers were Brendan Koss with 18 points, Jake Hilla with 17 points, Evan Delke with 10 points, and Matt Altman with five assists.

“We played a pretty good defense, but we still have room for improvement,” Rogers City coach Matt Ponik said. “Oscoda played a tough game, since it was their homecoming. We matched their intensity and made the plays we had to.”

Rogers City (10-2) plays Alcona on Tuesday.

Fairview 65, Au Gres 43

FAIRVIEW–The Fairview boys basketball team won against Au Gres on Friday, with a final score of 65-43.

Fairview got off to an early lead in the first quarter, 20-15 and kept its lead at the half, 36-25. After the third quarter, Fairview led 48-33.

Fairview’s leading scorer was Seth Cleeves with 20 points, Jeremy Fleszar with 13, and Durius Oaks with 12.

“They definitely had a lot turnovers which led to some easy baskets,” Fairview coach Rick Ebert said. “We had some open looks and knocked those down. It was a better team effort tonight.”

Fairview (9-5) plays Charlton Heston on Tuesday.

O-G 55, Atlanta 46

OWENDALE–The Atlanta boys basketball team lost against Owendale-Gagetown Friday 55-46.

After the first quarter, Atlanta was losing 17-8. At the half, Atlanta was down twenty points, 35-15, and in the third quarter, Atlanta still trailed, 42-28.

“In the first half we were losing by a lot,” Atlanta coach Kevin Haren said. “We were able to turn it around but it wasn’t quite enough at the end.”

Atlanta’s leading scorers were Aaron Cazort with 12 points and Austin Corbin with 11.

Atlanta (2-11) plays in Posen on Tuesday.

Tawas 48, Ogemaw Heights 45

WEST BRANCH– The Tawas boys basketball team won in a close game against Ogemaw Heights Friday, 48-45.

Tawas was able to gain the lead early on in the first quarter 17-15. Ogemaw was able to recover and get the lead 28-21 at halftime. Ogemaw was still leading after the third quarter 36-33, but Tawas ultimately scored enough to win.

Tawas’s leading scorers were Owen Irvin with 23 points and Michael Anderson with 11.

Tawas (8-4) plays on Thursday in Whittemore-Prescott.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Walled Lake Western 34, Alpena 27

AUBURN HILLS–Playing the second game of a back-to-back, the Alpena girls basketball team couldn’t match its effort from Thursday and lost to Walled Lake 34-27 on Friday at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

The Wildcats (9-4) had previously played and beaten Gaylord at home on Thursday.

“The experience of a lifetime for both teams, a competitive game filled with great sportsmanship and smiles,” Alpena co-coach Kelley Miko said. “We hope to continue the relationship with Walled Lake Western and see a future game happening.”

O-G 52, Atlanta 33

OWENDALE–The Atlanta girls basketball team faced a tough loss against Owendale-Gagetown Friday, losing 52-33.

After the first quarter, Atlanta led 8-7, but by halftime Owendale was up 23-14. Owendale kept the lead after the third quarter, 39-22.

Atlanta’s leading scorer for the night was Tiffany Juergens with 17 points. Owendale’s top scorer was Allison Witzke.

Atlanta (1-15) hosts Posen on Monday.
