Mid game lull hurts Wildcats in defeat

MIDLAND–The Alpena boys basketball team faced a tough loss against Midland Dow 49-30.

At the half, the score was 21-15 in Midland’s favor. Alpena was only able to score two points in the third quarter.

Cam DeCaire was Alpena’s leading scorer with ten points.

“We really struggled offensively. We couldn’t even seem to buy a basket,” Alpena coach John Pintar said. “The second and third quarters did us in. We really struggled on that end.”

Alpena’s junior varsity team won 58-45. Kayden Wisniewski led the team with 14 points. Josh Smith and Brand Secrest weren’t far behind with 12 and eight points respectively.

Alpena’s freshmen team lost 62-53 with Kelly Stark scoring 26 points for the team. Jordan Schultz also scored seven points.

Alpena (7-11) plays in Cadillac Monday.

Hillman 67,

Fairview 61

FAIRVIEW–The Hillman boys basketball team won in a game against Fairview on Tuesday 67-61.

After the first quarter, Hillman was up 22-19. At the half, Fairview wasn’t that far behind with a score of 30-27 in Hillman’s favor. After the third quarter, Hillman led 53-40.

Fairview’s leading scorers were Tyler Ross with 22 points and Seth Cleeves with 11.

“The boys played right with them defensively. We had some letdowns at critical times,” Fairview coach Rick Ebert said. “We were right there, but we lost our focus on defense.”

The leading scorers for Hillman were Gunnar Libby with 22 points and Brandon Banks with 16.

“It was well fought by both sides. Gunnar Libby had a nice game, he had eight assists and five steals in addition to the points he scored. It was a good night for him as a senior. We finished strong,” Hillman coach Eric Muszynski said. “Fairview is a tough team to play, and we were fortunate to get out on top. They’re fundamentally sound, and they play the game the right way.”

Fairview (11-6) hosts Rogers City on Friday.

Hillman (16-0, 11-0 North Star League) plays Wednesday against Oscoda in a makeup game.

Tawas 59, W-P 49

Owen Irvin scored 17 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter and the Tawas boys basketball team pulled away from Whittemore-Prescott down the stretch to win 59-49 on Monday.

Dakota Rupp led Tawas (11-5) with 22 points, but Irvin caught fire in the fourth quarter for the Braves, who outscored the Cardinals 19-7 in the final eight minutes.

“Owen shot the ball really well and the guys rebounded well and were active in the paint,” Tawas coach Todd Kaems said.

Tawas trailed 16-12 after one quarter and 34-28 at halftime. Whittemore led 42-40 after three quarters before the Braves finally pulled away.

Shawn Edmonds led Whittemore with 15 points and Kyle Colton added 13.

Tawas hosts Hale tonight.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Posen 68, Wolverine 8

WOLVERINE–The Posen girls basketball team mercied Wolverine 68-8 on Tuesday.

Posen took the lead after the first quarter 14-6. At halftime, Posen led 33-8. Wolverine wasn’t able to score in the third, leaving Posen to a 51-8 lead.

Posen’s leading scorers were Brooke Ciarkowski with 21 points, Cami LaTulip with 17 points, and Anissa Eagling with 12 points.

“Everybody was involved for this game,” Posen coach Karl Momrik said. “It was a good game for everyone to get action. The girls played well and they passed well.”

Posen’s junior varisty team defeated Wolverine 47-37. Megan Rasmussen led for Posen with 16 points, and Hannah Stone added 12 to the scoreboard.

Tuesday’s game marked the end of the regular season for Posen (9-11). The Vikings play in the district game next Wednesday.

Harbor Light 65, Atlanta 16

ATLANTA–The Atlanta girls basketball team lost to Harbor Light Christian Academy on Tuesday 65-16.

Harbor Light got the lead early on in the game and was up 21-5 after the first quarter. At the half, Harbor Light held the lead 37-10. Atlanta wasn’t able to score in the third quarter with Harbor Light leading 52-10 after 24 minutes.

Atlanta’s leading scorer was Tiffany Juergens with ten points.

The leading scorer for Harbor Light was Mikayla Kersting with 22 points.

“They really paid with higher intensity tonight. We were battling sickness and injuries and played through it as best as we could,” Atlanta coach Melony Haskin said. “It was an aggressive game.”

Atlanta (1-17) hosts Boyne Falls on Thursday.
