Lady Lumberjacks fall to Delta

The Alpena Community College women’s basketball team played a tough, hard-fought game, but in the end came up a bit short falling to Delta Community College by a score of 77-50 on Saturday at Park Arena.

The Lumberjacks started off slow and fell in a hole early after Delta opened the game going on an 11-2 run and forcing ACC head coach Bobby Allen to call a timeout.

The Lumberjacks responded scoring four of the first six points after the timeout to cut into the lead, but as was the trend most of the night, just when Alpena got within striking distance, the Pioneers went on a run as they held an 18-8 leaf after one.

ACC opened the second quarter strong as they scored the first six points of the quarter to cut the lead to four.

Again Delta answered and found ways to extend the lead and despite a strong quarter for the ACC women, Delta held a 30-27 halftime lead.

The Pioneers came out in the second half and started controlling the game as they continued to find ways to score and slowed ACC down enough to grab a 14 point leaf heading into the final quarter of play.

The fourth quarter was all Pioneers as ACC scored the first basket of the quarter and then were held scoreless for over six minutes as Delta went on a 13-0 run over that span to blow the game wide open and take a commanding 26 point lead late and coast to a lopsided victory despite being tested at times in the first half.

The Lumberjacks were led by Morgan Allen who scored eight points. Kendra Cole added seven points. Anne Archambeau collected six points and Alexis Smith, Kailey Hunt, Kelsey Huffman, Brooke Ellis and Arielle Gamble all chipped in with four points apiece in the losing effort.

Delta’s Jenna Szostak led all scorers pouring in a game high 24 points. Ashley Lee added 16 points and Harmany Williams chipped in with 15 points.

Alpena falls to 3-9 overall on the year and 3-5 in conference play. The Lumberjacks are currently on the outside looking in as they are in fifth place in the conference and just one spot out of the playoff picture.

ACC will be back in action tonight when the play host to Lake Superior State JV.
