Alpena hockey team edges Marysville 2-1

CHELSEA–The Alpena High hockey team came up on the winning end of a tight game game with Marysville on Friday during the Chelsea Public School Tournament, topping the Vikings 2-1.

Alpena (12-4-1) rallied from a 1-0 deficit in the second period and lit the lamp twice in the middle frame as all the game’s scoring took place over a five-minute span.

“Marysville had only 13 guys, but were pretty good. We’ve been able to run teams into the ground in the third period and they played good,” Alpena coach Pete Doubek said.

After a Marysville goal just 48 seconds into the second period, Cam Cosbitt knotted the game at 2:14, scoring with an assist from Ben Budnick.

Evan LeTourneau gave Alpena the lead for good with a goal at 5:25 with an assist from Anthony Berg.

Noah Kent made 30 saves for the Wildcats in goal.

Alpena were outshot the Vikings 31-30 and overcame a back-and-forth third period, including a late penalty to hang on for the win.

“Ben Budnik had a great game and the third period was a little hair-raising. We took a penalty and had some new penalty killers out there,” Doubek said.

Alpena will wrap up its three-game stint in the tournament with a game against Muskegon Mona Shores at 2 p.m. today.

“It should be a battle. They should be the best team we play here, so we’ll have to bring our ‘A’ game,” Doubek said.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Rogers City 60,

Atlanta 20

ROGERS CITY — The Rogers City boys basketball team earned a big victory at home on Friday against the visiting Atlanta Huskies, winning by a final score of 60-20.

The Hurons got out to a huge lead early and never looked back.

After opening a 20-8 first quarter lead, Rogers City continued to play strong at both ends of the court and extended its lead to 41-12 heading into the half and was able to coast the rest of the way.

The Hurons were led by Phil Grambau who had a game high 16 points.

Nick Byarski led Atlanta with nine points.

Rogers City improves to 8-2 and will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Au Gres.

Pellston 64,

Onaway 55

ONAWAY — The Onaway boys basketball team suffered another close and frustrating loss on Friday, falling to Pellston by a score of 64-55.

The Cardinals started off strong in the first quarter, but as the game went on made too many costly mistakes. Pellston held a 48-34 lead after three quarters, but Onaway was able to cut into the lead and get to within five points with under three minutes to play, but just didn’t have enough in the end after committing 30 turnovers in the game.

“I thought we played good coming out, but we were too careless with the ball and we just let the game get out of control,” Onaway coach Eddy Szymoniak said. “We were able to get to within five, but we just ran out of gas. We have to play four quarters like we did at the beginning and end of the game. I did see some good things and our kids battled and never gave up.”

Keaton Brewer led the Cardinals with 22 points and nine rebounds. Trevor Wregglesworth put together a solid all around performance with 16 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Onaway falls to 3-6 overall with the loss and will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Indian River.

Mio 46, Posen 37

POSEN–Shooting troubles doomed the Posen boys basketball team’s chances for a victory on Friday.

The Vikings played to a 32-32 tie with Mio after three quarters, but the Thunderbolts pulled away in the final eight minutes to win the game, 46-37.

“We missed shots from within eight feet. We had plenty of opportunities we just didn’t connect on,” Posen coach Chris Keller said. “We could not convert the easy points we were given.”

Posen (1-7) led 10-8 after one quarter, but trailed 25-19 at halftime. Both teams played to a 32-32 tie after three quarters before Mio outscored Posen 14-5 in the final quarter.

Jared Sharpe led Posen with nine points and Izaiah Hincka added eight.

Brendan DeFlorio led Mio with 16 points.

Posen plays at Alcona on Tuesday.
