Alpena girls basketball team tops Petoskey

PETOSKEY — The Alpena girls basketball team put together a solid performance on Tuesday night and defeat Big North Conference foe Petoskey 51-39.

The Wildcats jumped out to a four point first quarter lead and eventually widened the gap, taking a 28-14 lead into the half.

The Northmen battled hard in the second half and cut the lead to six in the fourtyh quarter, but Alpena remained composed and ended up holding on to secure the win.

The Wildcats got a balanced scoring attack with Emma Jore leading the way with 10 points. Jessica Marwede, Jasmyn Schultz and Kourtney Jones each added seven points apiece.

“Petoskey had a definite height advantage with two six foot kids and we neutralized the boards. We also did a nice job of being patient offensively, and we didn’t panic when Petoskey moved to full court pressure,” Alpena coach Steve McCourt said.

The win moves the Wildcats record to 8-3 overall and the team will be back in action on Thursday when they host Gaylord.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Hillman 64,

Hale 46

HALE — The streaks continued for the Hillman boys basketball team as the put together a solid effort on Tuesday night defeating Hale by a score of 64-46.

“We led from start to finish and it was just another well rounded effort from our guys tonight. It was a tough, physical game and I was happy with the way we battled,” Hillman coach Eric Muszynski said.

Brandon Banks led Hillman pouring in 27 points on the night. Gunnar Libby scored 11 points and dished out eight assists. Kory Henigan chipped in with nine points and ripped down seven rebounds and Billy Kolcan collected eight points in the win.

Hillman improves to 11-0 overall on the year and is 7-0 in North Star League play.

The Tigers will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Whittemore-Prescott.

Rogers City 61,

Au Gres 33

AU GRES — The Rogers City boys basketball team earned a 61-33 victory over Au Gres on Tuesday.

The Hurons trailed 15-14 after the first quarter, but put the clamps down defensively and took an eight point lead into the break and a great second half led to a big win over a worthy opponent.

“We played a great second half both offensively and defensively. We held Au Gres to just one point in the third quarter and that made a big difference in the game,” Rogers City coach Matt Ponik said.

The Hurons were led by Jake Hilla who poured in 19 points. Caleb Karsten added 11 points and Andrew Radke chipped in with eight points. Matt Altman dished out eight assists in the win.

Rogers City improves to 9-2 overall and will travel to Oscoda on Friday.

Whittemore-Prescott 59,

Fairview 49

FAIRVIEW — The Fairview boys basketball team suffered a 10 point loss on Tuesday, falling to Whittemore-Prescott by a score of 59-49.

The teams were tied at the end of one quarter, before Whittemore took a five point lead into the half.

Fairview did all it could in the second half, but the Cardinals had an answer each time Fairview attempted to tie or take the lead.

Tyler Ross and Darius Oaks led the Eagles scoring 10 points apiece in the losing effort.

Fairview falls to 8-4 overall on the year and will host Au Gres on Friday.

Oscoda 69,

Atlanta 37

ATLANTA — The Oscoda boys basketball team was victorious on Tuesday night, defeating Atlanta by a score of 69-37.

The Owls were in control right from the opening tip as they led by 11 points after one quarter and continued to build on their lead throughout the contest.

Tyley Auger led the way for the Huskies scoring 15 points in the loss, while Austin Corbin added nine points.

Atlanta falls to 2-9 on the year and will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Owendale.

WRESTLING

GAYLORD — The Onaway wrestling team competed in the Northern Michigan Championship over the weekend in Gaylord.

The team of Teddy Peters (125), Matthew Grant (130), Coty Ionetz (145) and Troy Klein (152) finished 13th overall as a team in the 29 team tournament.

“The guys wrestled tough all day and I noticed some very good improvements in confidence at different points throughout the day,” Onaway coach Mark Grant said.

Klein earned a first round win over Jaxon Labreck (Traverse City West) 3-2, then fell in the quarterfinals to Antonio Raona (Oscoda) 3-2. Klein then got a second round consolation win over Alex Chourinard (Gladstone) 7-4 and a fifth place match win over Logan Joseph (Grayling) 4-2.

“Troy picked up his offensive game if the fifth place match and that helped him avenge a loss from two weeks ago against Logan Joseph,” Grant said.

Peters scored a first round win over Delkin James (Roscommon) at 1:59, before suffering a quarterfinal loss to eventual champion Hunter Larson (Escanaba) 14-2. Peters finished with a second round consolation loss to eventual fifth place finisher Nathan Childs (Pinconning) at 1:48.

“Teddy scored the first takedown on the number one seed in the second round and ultimately lost partly due to lack of experience, but he wrestled very well,” Grant said.

Matthew Grant had a first round bye and then earned a win in the quarterfinals over Jeremy Chernaukas (Charlevoix) via fall at 5:18.

He then was victorious in the semifinals against number two seed and then undefeated Cole Hansen (Gladstone) 9-0.

Grant went on to lose in the finals against two-time state champion Dom Lajoie (Gaylord) 18-2.

“Matthew wrestled well and earned that spot in the finals. Dom is great young man and fantastic wrestler who Matthew looks up to. It was his goal to make the finals with Dom and he did what he could to give Dom a good match,” coach Grant said. “We look forward to a week of just practice while preparing for the conference challenge on home mats this Saturday.”

Britney Wolgast (103) won her bracket in the JV tournament on Friday night in Gaylord. She went 3-0 to earn her title.

Same Tennant (171) also wrestled in the JV meet and finished third.
