Hockey, softball tournaments being held this weekend

The regular season is more than a few months away, but the Alpena High hockey team will see some action this weekend during the 2016 Summer Memorial High School Hockey Tournament at Northern Lights Arena.

Games will start today and run through Sunday with each of the six teams entered playing four times over the weekend. Alpena’s roster will likely feature a mix of returning varsity players and JV players.

Other than Alpena, the teams participating are L’Anse Creuse North, Utica, Gaylord, Cheboygan and Ann Arbor Pioneer.

Alpena will play at 7 p.m. tonight against Ann Arbor Pioneer and will play two games on Saturday. The Wildcats will play L’Anse Creuse North at noon on Saturday and Utica at 4 p.m.

The two other games scheduled for today are: L’Anse Creuse North vs. Gaylord at 4 p.m. and Utica vs. Cheboygan at 5:30 p.m.

The games on Sunday are as follows: 5th/6th place game at 10:30 a.m., 3rd/4th place game at noon and championship game at 1:30 p.m.

The seventh annual Presque Isle Girls Softball (PIGS) tournament will be held in Rogers City this weekend.

Along with the local teams, the tournament will have teams from Livonia, Coleman, Midland, Kingsley, Oakland, Mt Pleasant and the Pontiac area. In all, 22 teams are competing in three different age brackets.

Five fields will be used in Rogers City with the hub being the Gilpin high school fields. There will be concessions and vendors at that location.

Along with the Gilpin fields, games will also be played at the Rogers City Little League fields and the Hole.

In the 14U division, the Moran Iron Works Vulcans could be considered the favorite. The Vulcans have won three summer tournaments and are headed to a national tournament at the end of the month. In the 16U division, the Alpena Thundercats have two teams competing and the Vulcans and Presque Isle Panthers have teams in the division as well.
