Alpena Senior Citizens Center hosting golf scramble on July 16

For the third straight year, the Alpena Senior Citizens Center is hosting the 501 River Classic to raise money for a good cause.

The event, which is an 18-hole, four-person golf scramble will take place at Alpena Golf Club on July 16 with a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start. Its purpose is to raise money for the center’s support programs like Meals on Wheels.

“If you love golf, it’s a good way to help the senior citizens of Alpena County and still have some fun,” Alpena Senior Citizens Center PR Director Tracy Niedzwiecki said.

In Alpena County, 29 percent of the population is 60 years old or older and Niedzwiecki said from October to May, 53,488 meals are delivered to senior citizens of Alpena County by Meals on Wheels.

Programs such as Meals on Wheels and in-home support programs allow senior citizens to live on their own longer and they’re programs that a large number of residents use regularly.

“We’ve seen a larger increase in the number of individuals we are supplying meals to,” Niedzwiecki said.

Programs like these are grant-funded, but the center still raises money to help pay for them. Niedzwiecki said a target goal for the event is $5,000.

The cost for the golf scramble is $250 per four-person team and includes a luncheon at the RolinLynx Bar & Grill.

There will also be several prizes available including a $1,000 hole-in-one contest sponsored by Lappan Insurance Agency.

Golfers wanting to register can call the center at 356-3585. The deadline to sign up is July 13.
