Getting the job done

LAKE LEELANAU-Ally Streich delivered the first punch and Hannah Fleming delivered the knockout blow.

Together the two of them delivered another regional championship to the Rogers City softball team.

Streich’s bases-clearing double and Fleming’s two-run home run gave the Hurons enough offense to get by North Star League rival Mio 6-4 in a Division 4 regional final game on Saturday at Lake Leelanau St. Mary.

The win advances the Hurons (29-11) to a quarterfinal matchup against Indian River Inland Lakes on Tuesday at Traverse City St. Francis in a rematch of last year’s regional final.

Rogers City defeated Frankfort 7-6 in a regional semifinal and the win over Mio gives the Hurons their third quarterfinal appearance in four seasons.

“I’m really proud of the girls. I thought Mio played fantastic and we had a couple big hits,” Rogers City coach Karl Grambau said. “It was our day and we’re happy to move on, now we’ve got to get ready for our next game.”

Tied 1-1 after two and a half innings in the final, Streich came through with two outs, sending a pitch to right field for a double to clear the bases and give the Hurons a 4-1 lead. Sarah Meredith led off the inning with a single and Fleming followed with a double. After two outs, Hannah Dittmar was hit by a pitch, loading the bases and paving the way for Streich’s hit.

“I knew had an important role to do right then and I just knew I had to execute for the good of my team,” Streich said. “When I knew that was at least a double I hit, I felt really good.”

Streich’s hit proved vital for the next two innings as the Hurons went relatively quietly in their next two turns at the plate.

Mio struck back in the top of sixth inning as Whitney Kann had an RBI double and Taylor Whitman followed her with an RBI single to cut the lead to 6-4. An error later in the inning put runners on the corners for the Thunderbolts with two outs, but Jayna Hance struck out Karley Auten to end the threat.

With a slim lead, the Hurons got outs in the bottom of the inning before Meredith reached on a fielder’s choice. Fleming then deposited an offering from Lauren Kuffel over the center field fence to put Rogers City ahead 6-4.

Mio scored a run in its last turn at the plate on an RBI hit from Cassidy Deflorio, but the Thunderbolts ultimately left two runners aboard as Taylor Fleming caught a fly ball in center field from Emily Mangutz for the final out. An inability to bring home base runners caught up to the Thunderbolts, who stranded two runners in three separate innings.

Hance earned the win for Rogers City, allowing four runs on nine hits with one walk and six strikeouts. She persevered through a line shot off the arm in the top of the seventh inning to induce Mangutz’s fly ball for the last out.

Hannah Fleming led Rogers City with two hits and two RBI and Streich had a hit and three RBI. Kayla Rabeau also had two hits.

Deflorio gave Mio a 1-0 in the top of the first inning on an RBI single, but Rogers City answered back in the bottom of the inning when Hance scored after an obstruction call.

In the opener, it was Rabeau who came through with big hits. The sophomore had a two-run triple in the fourth inning and followed that with an two-run single in her next at-bat.

A bloop single in the top of the seventh inning allowed the Panthers to cut the lead to 7-6 with two outs, but Hance struck out Keziah Stockdale to end the game.

Frankfort tied the game 5-5 in the top of the fifth inning as Mackenna Kelly had a two-run triple and Hannah Nostrandt had an RBI bunt single. The lead was shortlived though as Rabeau’s single in the bottom of the inning pushed the go-ahead across.

The Hurons scored a run in each of the first two innings before the Panthers rallied for two runs in the third inning. Rabeau’s triple in the fourth inning along with an RBI single from Meredith gave Rogers City a 5-2 lead.

Rabeau finished with three hits and four RBI; Hannah Fleming had three hits and Dittmar had two hits.

Hance allowed six runs on 11 hits with no walks and five strikeouts.

After coming up short in last year’s regional, the Hurons were more than happy to celebrate a regional title especially after surviving grueling heat and two close games.

“It’s a great feeling. We’ve worked so hard during the season for this moment right here and we did it,” Streich said. “Our team is strong, we’re dedicated and we work together well to get the job done.”
