Rogers City softball takes 2 from Wildcats

ROGERS CITY-The Rogers City softball team earned a pair of wins over visiting Alpena on Friday, sweeping the Wildcats 5-3 and 3-1 in a doubleheader.

In the opener, Jayna Hance earned the win for the Hurons (23-8), striking out two and allowing six hits.

Rogers City took an early lead when Sarah Meredith singled to score Hance in the first inning and Taylor Fleming followed with a two-run home run.

Alpena answered back with three runs in the top of the second inning and the Hurons took the lead again in the bottom of the inning when Meredith singled to score Kayla Rabeau. The Hurons added another run in the fifth inning.

Hance and Rabeau had two hits each for Rogers City and Meredith had three. Hannah Fleming, Amanda Wirgau and Hannah Dittmar each had one.

Lauren Heath struck out seven for Alpena and Mary Schimmel led Alpena with two hits. Jordan Modrzynski, Mykayla Price, Jessica Marwede and Alexis Smith each had one.

Hannah Fleming earned the win in the nightcap, striking out five in seven innings. Hance had two hits, Meredith had a double among two hits and Rabeau, Taylor Fleming and Ally Streich each had one.

Modrzynski led Alpena with two hits and Jasmyn Schultz, Schimmel and Alyssa Gehrke each had one.

Heath took the loss and struck out seven.

“Rogers City played extremely well and I give them a lot of credit,” Alpena coach Paul Marwede said. “Rogers City had great pitching and hitting and hopefully this could propel us both into districts.”

Rogers City plays in a tournament in West Branch today.

Local teams compete at NSL Finals

WHITTEMORE-The Fairview girls team and the Whittemore-Prescott boys team took top honors at the North Star League Championships on Tuesday in Whittemore.

Fairview won the overall girls title with 72 1/2 points, followed by Rogers City (58), Alcona (56), Posen (55), Whittemore (30), Hillman (29), Oscoda (19), Au Gres (14 1/2), Mio (10) and Hale (6).

In the Little Dipper, Fairview had 113 1/2 points, followed by Posen (90), Hillman (43), Au Gres (41 1/2) and Hale (39).

In the boys division, Whittemore won with 147 1/2 points followed by Fairview (57), Hillman (46), Alcona (31), Oscoda (25), Hale (23 1/2), Mio (12), Au Gres (5), Rogers City (4) and Posen (2).

In the Little Dipper, Fairview won with 150 points, followed by Hillman (80), Hale (57), Au Gres (48) and Posen (18).

Alcona’s Torie Harmon won both the 400 dash and 800 run and helped Alcona to wins in the 1,600 and 3,200 relays. Fairview’s Sarah Handrich swept the hurdles and her teammate Mara Krupinski won the 100 and 200 dashes. Rogers City’s Emily Malocha won the 1,600 and 3,200 runs.

For the boys, Hillman’s Billy Kolcan won the high jump and 300 hurdles and helped Hillman to wins in two relays.
