POSEN-Before they head to Grand Rapids next week to compete against the best track and field athletes in the state, Posen’s Lindsey Randall and Rogers City’s Emily Malocha got the chance to show why they’re two of the best athletes in Presque Isle County.

Randall and Malocha combined for seven individual first place finishes on Wednesday at the Presque Isle Championships and Rogers City’s boys team defeated Onaway to end the Cardinals’ 14-year run of first place finishes.

Malocha, who qualified for the state finals in the 1,600 and 3,200 runs, was in control on Wednesday, pacing the field in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 runs. She also anchored the Hurons’ 3,200 relay team.

Randall, who qualified for the finals in the 200 and 400 dashes, won both of those events on Wednesday as well as the 100 dash and long jump.

The Onaway boys team had won the boys team championship at the meet for 14 consecutive years, but the Hurons kept things close all afternoon. A win by Onaway’s Brad Brewbaker in the 200 dash closed Rogers City’s lead to 82-80 and a win by Morgan McLean in the 3,200 run put the Cardinals ahead 88-86.

With the team title riding on the last event, the Hurons emerged victorious in the 1,600 relay, beating the Cardinals by 20 seconds to win 92-88.

Posen’s boys team finished with 46 points.

McLean also had wins in the high jump and 1,600 runs and the Cardinals won the other three relays.

Onaway won the girls title with 84 points, beating Rogers City and Posen who both tied with 72.
