Cards take 2 from Posen in softball twinbill

POSEN – The Onaway softball team lit up the scoreboard and swept a doubleheader against Posen on Wednesday night.

The Cardinals won game one by a final score of 11-5. Calley Selke pitched six innings for Onaway and allowed three earned runs and struck out 11 batters. Jolene Reese toed the rubber for Posen and allowed nine hits, eight earned runs, while striking out four.

Offensively, the Cardinals were led by Alison LaFave who went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Elissa Nash went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Chelsea Brewbaker and Kayla Metty each went 2-for-4.

Posen’s Kayla Lenard recorded two hits, both of which were doubles to lead the Vikings. Brooke Ciarkowski had a two-RBI double and Emily Robins had an RBI.

Onaway continued to score runs in the nightcap, winning game two by a score of 14-7. Kennedy Crawford picked up the win for Onaway, tossing six innings, allowed six earned runs on 11 hits and struck out five.

Jade Galer went a perfect 5-for-5 with two runs scored to lead the the Cardinals offensively. LaFave went 3-for-4 and scored three runs. Taylor Ehrke went 2-for-5 with a run and Crawford went 2-for-4.

At the plate, Posen was led by Hannah Stone who was 3-for-4 with an RBI. The Vikings collected 10 hits in the game, but were unable to keep up with Onaway’s offensive outburst.

Posen falls to 1-9 overall and will be back in action today when it hosts Hale.

Onaway improves to an even 5-5 overall and will travel to Joburg today.

Alcona sweeps Joburg

LINCOLN – The Alcona softball team took on Johannesburg-Lewiston in its home opener Wednesday. The Tigers came away with a 6-0 victory in game one of the doubleheader. Hailee Gordy led the way for Alcona with two triples in the contest.

Alcona won the nightcap 11-10 in what was a slugfest. Brittany Decker led the Tigers with three hits. Abby Lobaugh had two hits including the game winner. Alissa Terpstra hit a home run and also had a great night on the mound, striking out 10 batters in each game. Madison Lane finished game two on the mound and recorded three strikeouts.

BASEBALL

Alcona beats, ties Joburg

LINCOLN – The Alcona baseball team was in action on Wednesday night as they played host to visiting Johannesburg-Lewiston.

The Tigers dropped game one of a doubleheader by a score of 6-1. Jake McFadden suffered the loss. Offensively for Alcona, McFadden went two for three and Brock Franklin went 1-for-1 with a pair of walks.

The nightcap was played to a 7-7 tie after six innings. Mitchell Krisan started the game tossing four innings before being relieved by Eric Davies.

At the plate, Franklin went a perfect 3-for-3, while Davies and Alex Stephenson each went 2-for-3.

Alcona is 3-4-1 on the year and will be back in action today when it hosts Mio in a North Star League doubleheader.

TRACK AND FIELD

Alcona hosts NSL Tri

LINCOLN-The Alcona girls track team came out on top on Wednesday during a North Star League Tri with Hale and Rogers City.

Alcona finished with 72 points, ahead of the Hurons (51) and Eagles (37).

Sam Schott, Brooke Shultz and Torie Harmon each one two events for Alcona and the Tigers were winners in three of the four relays.

Schott won the discus (67-6) and shot put (24-9 3/4). Harmon won the 400 dash (1:04.38) and 800 run (2:34.63). Shultz won the long jump (13-10 1/2) and pole vault (7-6).

Hale won the boys race with 74 points, ahead of Alcona (56) and Rogers City (34).

Alcona claimed wins in two relays and Rogers City’s Aaron Romel won the 100 dash and 200 dash

Fairview sweeps NSL Tri

FAIRVIEW-The Fairview track teams took top honors at a North Star League Tri at Fairview on Tuesday.

Fairview’s boys team won with 78 points, ahead of Hillman (65) and Posen (17). Fairview’s girls team won with 57 points, ahead of Posen (39) and Hillman (38).

Andrea Ford won the 200 dash and 400 dash for the Eagles and Fairview also swept the girls relay events.

Billy Kolcan had three first place finishes for Hillman and Brandon Banks had two, including a new school record in the 800 run.
