Onaway boys basketball team falls to Bellaire

BELLAIRE – The Onaway boys basketball team was shorthanded on Wednesday and suffered a disappointing loss because of it, falling to Bellaire by a final score of 82-41.

Bellaire took control early on, outscoring the Cardinals 19-5 in the opening quarter and never looked back. Onaway had a hard time controlling the paint tonight and that ultimately led to their defeat as Bellaire scored a majority of its points down low.

The Eagles led by 24 heading into the half and were able to outscore Onaway in each quarter en route to a huge victory.

“We were unable to put pressure on them tonight and we just ran out of gas. Not too make any excuses, but we were a little shorthanded tonight and it was also one of the worst games that I have coached, most of the points we let up were inside and I stuck to guns and didn’t make the changes. We need to have some other guys step up and I have to do a better job in preparing our kids as well,” Onaway coach Eddy Szymoniak said.

The Cardinals were led by Joe Sigsby who scored 14 points and Cortez Washington added nine points.

With the loss, Onaway suffers just its second loss of the season and is currently 10-2 overall and 6-2 in conference play.

The Cardinals host to Pellston on Friday.
