AHS XC competes in Spartan Invitational; Posen FB earns first season win

LANSING-The Alpena high school cross country team competed at the Spartan Invitational at Michigan State University on Friday.

Over 6,000 runners were involved in 16 races throughout the day. The Wildcats had 32 runners in the Elite Races, 17 of whom had their best time this season. Six ran a career best.

Mitchell Day placed in the top 30, earning a Spartan Medal with a time of 16:05. Mikayla Oliver led the lady Wilcats with a Career Best time of 21:48

Other top finishers for Alpena included: Tellis Donajkowski (17:09); Dallin Toth (19:30); Garret McHarg (21:20); Lauren Heath (23:50) and Olivia Custer (28:10).

FOOTBALL

Posen 24, Superior Central 6

EBEN JUNCTION-The Posen eight-man football squad picked up its first win of the season on Saturday in a 24-6 rout of Superior Central.

The Vikings (1-2) scored eight defensive points. Skyler Tulgetske had an interception touchdown while Darren Dubie scored a safety.

Tulgetske led the Vikings on the ground with 14 carries, 141 yards and two rushing touchdowns. Quarterback Travis Sharpe ran 12 times for 81 yards.

Sharpe threw 10-for-21 for 139 yards and one passing touchdown. He also threw one interception. He hit Tulgetske six times for 107 yards and a touchdown. Matthew Wisniewski caught four for 22 yards.

Tulgetske also led defensively, with 16 solo tackles and one interception. Sharpe had eight solo tackles and two assists. Evan Schuch had five solo tackles and recovered two fumbles.

Posen faces Ewen-Trout Creek next this Friday.

JV VOLLEYBALL

Posen competes in Oscoda tournament

OSCODA-The Posen junior varsity volleyball team competed in the Oscoda junior varsity tournament on Saturday. There were eight teams divided into two separate pools.

Posen played in a pool with Tawas, Oscoda, Au Gres and Whittemore-Prescott. The Vikings easily swept Tawas 25-13 and 25-14. It then beat Oscoda 25-6 and 25-12.

Posen took a two-game break before losing two to Whittmore, 18-25 and 22-25. The Vikings were placed second in the semi-finals where it lost 22-25 and 21-25 against Alcona.

“We played really well all morning. We are really starting to play the game well together as a team. I am proud of how we played,” coach Laurie Maynard said.

Samantha Lenard scored a total of 46 points on Saturday, including 25 aces. Elizabeth Kowalski scored 25 points and nine aces. Cami LaTulip had seven kills while Pia Siering had four. Samantha Lenard had 13 setting assists while Brianna Kuffel had 11.

SOCCER

Oscoda 6, Sault Area 1

SAULT SAINT MARIE-Oscoda beat Sault Area 6-1 in a recent soccer match.

The Owls (4-3, 2-0 North Star League) were led offensively by Eddie Silva with a hat trick. Single scores were posted by Clyde Whitney, Kyle Charters and Shawn Merrick. Wyatt Livvix, Brad Curley, Brandon Bissonette, Cody Griffin and Whitney all earned assists.

Goalie Curley made three saves, all in the second half. The Blue Devils only goal came from a direct kick 20 yards out.

Oscoda hosts Standish-Sterling Monday at 5:00pm.
