Alpena wrestling team has big weekend

The Alpena Wrestling team had a successful day at the Birch Run Team Tournament on Saturday by winning four dual matchups out of five and earning a fourth- place overall team finish.

The Wildcats beat Birch Run 40-37)and Carrollton 59- 18 before dropping a close dual to Caro 45-36 to finish in second place in pool play.

Alpena rebounded to win both of their final dual matchups against Millington, 48- 27 and Alma, 48- 36.

Ethan Kowalski 113/120 and Cayden Smith 157 both shined as each won all five matches on the day by pin or technical fall.

Brody Oliver (165) and Hudson Derry (175/190) also had great outings with four wins each.

Jonathon Parris (132), Matthew Kowalski (138/144), Eli Werth (138/144), Westin Mitchell (175), and John Dargis (285) each picked up three wins at the tournament. Alpena’s fast start with a current dual record of 7-1. The team returns to action on Wednesday at an assembly dual against Mio.
