ROGERS CITY - Rogers City Area Schools facilities will get some sprucing up over the summer.
District board members approved a list of projects aimed at keeping school facilities in good shape. Several are for athletic facilities, while a few concern the district central office recently constructed in the high school, Superintendent Kathleen Makowski said.
The project costs are expected to total around $65,000, nearly all of which will be paid out of the district's building and site fund, high school Principal Dave O'Bryant said. Makowski told the board the district had less money to spend on summer projects than in past years due to paying off the debt from a 2007 bond issue.
Over the summer, work will continue on installing gymnasium fans, and the high school gym floor will be sanded, repainted and refinished, Makowski said. The elementary school gym will get volleyball posts, and the gym and football field bleachers will get a few tweaks.
Changes for the new central office are in store as well, with plans calling for adding an awning and sign to the outside, Makowski said. The office also will get new parking.
The high school will get new security cameras to supplement a few already in place, O'Bryant said. Much of the cost for the system is being covered by a donation from the Rogers City Optimist Club.
Other projects include a new dust collection system for the high school industrial arts classroom, Makowski said. The list was decided upon at a property and facilities planning committee meeting on March 27.
"We ranked some things based on what we want to get done, what we need to get done and what we can afford to get done," she said.
The board approved a bid for $11,100, submitted by Zgorski-Micketti, Inc, to repair the district's boiler. It dates from 1991, and has an internal leak, Makowski said. To fix it, the boiler needs a new heat exchanger.
Work on the boiler will be done over the summer as well, Makowski said. The bid was approved by all board members except President Mike Marx, who abstained. He is a partner with the plumbing, heating and cooling contractor.
