'Bolts stay perfect with 7th straight win

MIO-The Mio boys basketball team improved to 7-0 on the season with a 59-25 victory over Fairview on Thursday in a North Star League game.

The Thunderbolts led 16-10 after one quarter of play and then stifled the Eagles (2-5) in the second quarter, outscoring them 16-1.

Micah Thomey led Mio with 14 points and six assists. Bryce Degrammott added 11 points and seven rebounds and Dennis Kann III and Aaron Georgieff had six rebounds each.

Kasson Willobee led Fairview with 11 points.

Fairview outscored Mio 10-7 in the third quarter, but Mio came roaring back in the final period, topping the Eagles 20-4 in the final eight minutes.

Mio is 6-0 in the North Star League and hosts Tawas on Tuesday.

Hale 50, Atlanta 32

ATLANTA-The Atlanta boys basketball trailed by just seven points entering the fourth quarter of a North Star League game against Hale on Thursday, but couldn't pull close to challenge for the lead and lost 50-32.

Atlanta trailed 35-28 entering the final period, but Hale outscored the Huskies 15-4 in the final eight minutes to take the win.

Garrett Badgero led Atlanta with 16 points and Jake Chambers added 10. Drey Focks led the Eagles with 18 points.

BASKETBALL

Tawas 65,

Oscoda 39

OSCODA-The Tawas girls basketball team got back to the .500 mark with a 65-39 win over Oscoda on Thursday.

Tawas got off to a fast start, leading 12-4 after the first quarter and 26-16 at halftime. The Braves (4-4) followed up by outscoring Oscoda 20-6 in the third quarter and 19-17 in the final period.

"I thought we played really solid," Tawas coach Todd Kaems said. "Everyone rebounded, we were good in transition and we were good offensively."

Serina Sciotti led Tawas with 20 points and Ivy Schaaf added 12.

Tori LaPointe led the Owls with 14 points.

Tawas hosts Standish on Monday.

Alcona 56, Whittemore-Prescott 26

WHITTEMORE-The Alcona girls basketball team opened Huron Shores Conference play with a 56-26 win over Whittemore-Prescott on Thursday.

Karina Cole had 25 points, five rebounds and five steals for the Tigers who took a 28-4 lead at the end of the first quarter and led 34-12 at the half.

"We turned it up on defense tonight," Alcona coach Brad Cole said. "Our whole team played well and we had many players contribute to this win."

Megan Quick also reached double figures for Alcona, notching 11 points and three steals.

Alcona led 44-20 after three quarters.

Other stats for Alcona included: Nikki Smith with seven points and four rebounds; Kendra Cole with four points and seven rebounds; Cassie Carpenter with three points and three rebounds; Turner Somers with two points, seven rebounds and five steals; Tylar Campbell with two points and three steals and Lilly Manning with two points and three rebounds.

Alcona's JV team defeated Whittemore 43-3.
