Editorial: Trailhead project worthy of support

December 21, 2012
The Alpena News

Alpena officials might be down, but they're not out.

That probably best sums up the reaction this week to news that a state grant that would have helped fund a trailhead in Alpena for the North Eastern State Trail had been denied.

The grant had been requested through the Michigan Natural Resources' Trust Fund, and while no funding was approved now, that won't stop city officials from trying again in the future.

Especially impressive about Alpena's application was city officials already had done their due diligence and had lined up almost all the needed matching funds needed for the project.

Had it been approved, the grant would have funded a trailhead along Woodward Avenue that would have contained restrooms, pavilion and large parking lot. It would have provided easy access to the new trail, which runs all the way to Cheboygan.

In a news story Friday, interim City Manager Greg Sundin said the city would reapply and that he was "staying positive."

"I think we will have a good chance of getting it," he said of the next round of funding.

Because so many entities had come together in support of the project, we believe state officials will look favorably upon it and be more in favor of it next time.

Certainly we're impressed with the local support behind it.
