Was that really Santa Claus?
December 20, 2012 - Bill Speer
I saw Santa Claus.
I saw Santa Claus Saturday, Dec. 15, in San Francisco. I didn't just see Santa Claus, however. I saw hundreds of Santa Claus, and Mrs. Claus, and reindeer, and elves, and...
For a minute, I thought I was at the North Pole. Or at least on the 45th parallel halfway there. But the palm trees convinced me otherwise.
I saw Santa(s) walking the streets. I saw Santa(s) singing songs. I saw Santa(s) passing out candy canes.
And, I saw Santa getting hauled into a police van. :(
Never before had I seen such a gathering. A little investigation revealed the group was part of Santacon, part of a worldwide Santa convention each year in December in major cities around the world. This year conventions were held in 276 cities and 37 countries. It was the 18th year for the Santas to gather in San Francisco. The purpose of the convention is well, to make merry (that is the sanitized and politically correct version.)
In San Francisco before heading to local watering holes around the city the Santas distribute food items and clothing to the homeless of the city.
Personally, I am hoping for the real Santa Claus to come visit Dec. 24.
The ones I saw were a little thin, a little short, a little, well - different than the one we know and love.
Ho. Ho. Ho.
