Please support library tax renewal proposal
I urge everyone to vote for the millage renewal for the Alpena County Library on Aug. 6. This is a 0.25-mill renewal. It will not increase your current tax bill (but it will lengthen the time it is in effect). The average household will pay $12 a year. You can check your tax bill under “Library: Special” to see what you are paying. I pay $7.15. This is a 20-year renewal needed to secure the USDA loan for the improvements. It also saves because elections cost money so a longer term makes good sense. The millage money will be used for some critical improvements including improved accessibility, a single main entrance with security cameras, separate, more secure children’s area, upgraded electrical and fire suppression systems, asbestos abatement; and replacement of the HVAC system for better humidity control. The antiquated HVAC system is having a negative affect on the library collections. Remember, our library is a community center. Besides the lending book aspect of what every library does, our facility is so very much more. I go there for concerts, lectures and forums. I have used the copy machine and the public computers and printers. I have done genealogy research. My grandson and I go to children’s programs regularly but especially love the Summer Book program with the Fair/Carnival. I have gotten books on CD/tape, movies, and music – checked out just like books are. I have gotten tax information and assistance. For all of this, I only pay for copies. And if you don’t personally use the library, it is still the heart of Alpena, providing no cost-low cost services to one and all. Your library is counting on you.
