Classic spending of taxpayer monies

It never ceases to amaze me how government entities spend taxpayer dollars.

In yesterday’s paper was an insert entitled “A-M-A Today” that, upon flipping through, I noticed there was no advertisers, none. So this insert seems to be totally funded (both money and man-hours) by the Alpena-Montmorency-Alcona Educational Service District.

I myself have no problem with the AMA or the vital services they provide. What I don’t appreciate is their spending any taxpayer dollars as they stated on the insert’s front page as “a chance to explain what you get for your money.” Either people care enough to already know what they do, or are able to do research and find out if they wish, or they don’t care at all.

But to spend a penny on this insert that could have been spent on their core mission is ridiculous. In my opinion, the insert is nothing more then a tool that is intended to make people feel all warm and fuzzy about the AMA so that, as their requests for millage increases hit future ballots, the odds of passage are increased. It’s the little things like this that have our federal government all the way down to the local governments broke or near broke and not controlling their spending like both the Bible and our grandparents taught us.
