Workshop about Lake Huron fishery Tuesday

The Hammond Bay Area Anglers Association is working with the Michigan Sea Grant and Lake Huron Citizens Fishery Advisory Committee to bring a Lake Huron Fisheries Workshop to Rogers City on Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Rogers City Senior and Community Center located at 131 Superior Street. Researchers and managers from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources along with experts from U.S. Geological Survey Great Lakes Science Center and Michigan State University will provide an overview of which salmon and trout species are surviving best in Lake Huron and what fishery management directions are being pursued.

Lake trout fishing has been improving in Northern Lake Huron as wild reproduction of this species has increased dramatically. The waters of Lake Huron from Alpena to Drummond Island are shared with five tribes under the 2000 State/Tribal/United States Great Lakes Fishery Federal Decree. This agreement specifies quotas of lake trout and other species that may be taken annually by state recreational anglers and the Tribal fishers. When the agreement was signed there were large numbers of salmon and whitefish so there was little interest in lake trout from the State and Tribes. Currently, with both whitefish and salmon abundance at much lower levels, care must be used to ensure lake trout numbers do not decline. Biologists and manager from all the parties are working together to establish lake trout quotas. Recent angler quotas have been exceeded in the waters from Rogers City to Drummond Island resulting in the possibility of the daily lake trout limit being reduced from three to two fish per day. A decision has not been made and there will be an extended discussion of this topic with plenty of time for your input.

The Workshop is free and anyone interested is encouraged to attend.
