Don’t distance yourself from honoring Mom

“Mothers never retire. No matter how old her children are she is always a Mom, always willing to encourage and help her children in any way she can.” — Catherine Pulsifer

Happy Mother’s Day!

From Millennials to Baby Boomers, no generation living today has experienced a Mother’s Day quite like this.

It will be unique, that is for sure.

Instead of a restaurant meal for mother today, with fancy linen and the best of china, a backyard barbecue served up on paper plates might be more in order. Or there also would be the option of stopping by a restaurant and ordering takeout for Mom today, then driving it home for her.

What about flowers or a special gift? Again, your options are somewhat limited this year. Many businesses remain closed, while others only can offer curbside pick-up. Forget about heading inside most of the stores in search of that special gift.

Visits in person on Sunday? Sorry, for many that will violate social distancing protocols in place. Instead, it will be a visit through Zoom, FaceTime, or Google Hangouts.

Welcome to Mother’s Day 2020.

With all the disruption in the world around us right now, it is perhaps more important than ever before to take time and remember our mothers this weekend.

And let’s not forget that, for many families across the world tomorrow, this will be the first Mother’s Day without a loved one to celebrate with. It is a sad but real truth.

Columnist Glenn Mollette, writing about Mother’s Day, shared these thoughts: “The way to celebrate Mother’s Day this year is don’t forget. Don’t distance yourself from this celebration. Honor mom while you have her. Honor some other mothers too who have been special to you.”

His words serve as a good reminder for all of us. If this pandemic has taught us anything this year, it is to take nothing for granted. You never know how good you had it until everything is taken away from you — even family relationships.

Stay-at-home restrictions will prevent me from even thinking about seeing my mother in person this year. With her not being one for technology, we won’t be teleconferencing, either. Instead, I’ll rely on the telephone to wish her well and get caught up. I’m sure it will be nice.

Whatever you do, however you spend it, I hope this Mother’s Day still will be memorable for these very special people in all of our lives.
