One-way; Two-way; No way!

Traffic on Second Avenue in downtown Alpena will remain one-way.

That was the decision of City Council earlier this month after months of study, deliberation and public hearings. Not everyone is in agreement that is the best solution, but it is the desire of council at this time that it remain as it is.

We are okay with that, and support the decision.

We believe there were solid and good arguments that could be made for both sides of this issue, and we would have rallied behind whatever council agreed to. However, in the end we believe the benefits from two-way traffic really didn’t out-weigh just keeping the traffic flow the way it was, so we are fine with the outcome.

And, while the debate over two-way traffic is finished for now, ultimately, as we said a few weeks ago in this space, it will be debated again. For decades people have studied the issue and for decades more, we expect those same deliberations will occur.

The smart resident wouldn’t plan too far into the future one way or the other regarding traffic downtown.

Today’s council has had their say.

A new council tomorrow might see things in a whole different perspective.

Some will say that is terrible … too much time and effort was wasted.

Others will applaud Nielsen for her support of one-way traffic through that section of town.

Either way, we haven’t seen the end of this discussion. For decades people have debated the issue and for decades more, we expect those same deliberations will occur.

Today, one-way traffic remains.

As for tomorrow, we all will wait and see.
