APS makes right call with change to school start date

We agree with members of Alpena Public Schools Board of Education to have students start school next year before Labor Day.

Classes will begin Aug. 28, the Monday before Labor Day.

We never have been a fan of waiting until after the holiday to begin classes, but until recently it was state law. Last year APS officials applied to the state for a waiver to begin classes early, and were granted one — although it came too late to make a difference for the current school year.

However, the board this week agreed to experiment in August with an early start to the 2017-18 school year, and we like the decision. We also appreciate the fact the decision wasn’t made quickly, without research or facts. The Alpena Area Chamber of Commerce did a survey of local industries to determine whether a change would adversely impact tourism in the region or student work opportunities. It was determined the early start would not adversely impact either.

Sports and other educational extra curriculars begin in August anyway. With that being the case, what good does waiting until September to start school really accomplish anymore?

The move is logical and uses good old common sense.

We believe it is one that everyone will benefit from.
