THOMAS F. RITTER

Thomas F. Ritter, 90, of Alpena passed away Friday, Sept. 25, 2020 at Sally’s Care Home.

Tom was born on Jan. 16, 1930 to Reuben and Harriett (Clark) Ritter in Gaylord, Michigan. Tom was a graduate of Petoskey High School. He attended Hope College, where he played college football and later received his master’s degree from Michigan State University. Tom served in the United States Army for two years during the Korean War as a medical lab tech earning several commendations.

On Feb. 15, 1969, Tom married Sarah Jane McGillicuddy. Tom was employed by Alpena Community College as Dean of Students and Director of Business Operations. He would eventually return to his hometown to serve as Business Manager for Petoskey Public Schools where he would retire in 1991. Upon his retirement, Tom returned to Alpena where he became active in many groups and organizations. He would serve on the Alpena Public Schools’ Board of Education from 1991-2003 and again from 2010-2013, 10 of those years as Board President. He also served as Maple Ridge Township Supervisor from 2005-2009. He also was a member of the Alpena Yacht Club, Petoskey Outboard Club, Petoskey Kiwanis Club, Alpena Area Recreation Committee, Alpena Rotary, Trinity Episcopal Church and Little Wolf Hunt Club. Tom also coached high school football and was active as a coach for Alpena Hockey Association. Tom found his greatest joy in watching his grandsons and could often be found attending their various sporting events.

Tom is survived by his son, Jeffrey “JP” (Vickie) Ritter; two grandsons, Austin, Ryan; sister, Susie (James) Osborne; brother, John Smith; a niece and nephews and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and dear friend, Kaye Weiland.

Visitation will take place Tuesday at Bannan Funeral Home from 3 p.m. until the funeral service at 6 p.m. with the Very Rev. William J. McClure officiating.
