NORMA MARIE SMITH

Norma Marie Smith, 95, of Alpena, passed away peacefully at Touch of Country AFC on Friday, Dec. 6, 2019. Norma was a joy to be around and will be dearly missed by all who crossed her path.

She was born in Alpena on Sept. 2, 1924 to the late George and Emma (Kirchoff) Olsen. Being raised in the area, Norma went on to graduate from Alpena High School. She worked as a volunteer for the American Red Cross during World War II, worked many years as administrative assistant to several local doctors’ offices. On Aug. 18, 1948 Norma married the love of her life William Smith at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Alpena. They were married 53 years until Bill’s passing in 2002.

Norma was an active member at St. Paul Lutheran Church for many years, helping with whatever she could. She was an avid reader, enjoyed watching basketball at all levels, and loved to support the Detroit Tigers.

She is survived by her two children, Julie (Lowell) Weide of Alpena and Peter (Tara) Smith of Virginia, six grandchildren, Jessica, Ann, Ryan, Nicole, Madison, and Samantha, seven great grandchildren, Riley, Caitlyn, Jonathan, Blaike, Brooklyn, Kevin, and Brody, a sister, Ann Olsen of Alpena, and many nieces and nephews.

Norma was preceded in death by her loving husband William, and ten siblings, Lucille Stafford, Betty Jore, Arthur, Clarence, Harvey, Alfred, Gerald, Wayne, Robert, and Myron Olsen.

Family will receive friends for visitation on Tuesday Dec. 10, 2019 at McWilliams Funeral Home from 11 a.m. until the time of funeral service at 3 p.m. with Rev. John Shipman officiating.
