DENNIS GRANT BOWEN

Dennis Grant Bowen, 81, of Alpena, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2019 at MidMichigan Medical Center-Alpena.

Denny was a lifelong resident of the area having been born Sept. 12, 1938 to the late Harold “Star” and Fern (Drake) Bowen. He was an avid deer and bird hunter. Denny was a competitive bird dog trainer; in fact, he and his dog Rod won the 1991 National Grouse Championship. He was also a fisherman and was known as Tweety Bird and regularly competed in the Michigan Brown Trout fishing tournament. He was a previous member of the P.K. Fletcher Gun Club and the Thunder Bay Steelheaders. Denny was a seaman for a time working on a number of Great Lake vessels, he worked for Besser Co., worked for the City of Alpena as a fireman and EMT for 32 years, and had a successful painting business for many years. In 2018 he received a Michigan State Troopers civilian award for his brave efforts providing life saving care for fallen State Trooper Larry L. Forreider.

Denny is survived by his children, Gwen Huelsmen, of California, Brenda Fochtman, of Florida, Jeff (Barb), of Presque isle, Todd (Anjanette), of Alpena, Brian (Sue), of Battle Creek, his brother Pat (Barb), of Alpena, and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter Pamela Osborn, and his brother Richard.

Denny is at McWilliams Funeral Home where visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2019 from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at noon with Rev. Joseph Muszkiewicz officiating. Online condolences can be registered at www.mcwilliamsfh.com.
