Merton John Lyons, 92, of Alpena peacefully passed away Friday, June 7, 2019, at Medilodge – Alpena.

Merton was born in Alpena on May 6, 1927, to the late Fred and Celia (Olmstead) Lyons. Known as Mert, he called Alpena home his entire life. Fittingly, he descended from a Mayflower voyager. On July 7, 1962, he married Alice Moleski. She preceded him in death on Sept. 29, 2002. For over 40 years, he worked hard on the Great Lakes as a merchant mariner, aboard many of Alpena’s cement ships. As many in the area know, that life requires great sacrifice, especially with a large family at home. Winter’s frozen lakes halted shipping, giving him needed precious time with his family. Mert was definitely a father and husband who gave his family all he could give. Proudly familiar with every square mile of the lakes, he was a contented raconteur on that subject for any listening ear. In his youth he enjoyed fast cars, snowmobiling, and fishing. In later years he was an avid neighborhood walker.

Surviving are his children, Deborah (Bruce) Murphy, Greg Lyons, Paul (Tracy) Lyons, David Lyons, Patrick (Michelle) Lyons; stepsons, Ronald (Sue) Connon, Joseph Connon; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Mert was preceded in death by stepson, Michael Connon; daughter-in-law, Joanna Lyons; five sisters, Berna Wozniak, Lenore Adamski, Ruth Cole, Margaret Idalski, Lois Chapman; one brother, Fred Lyons.

Memorial visitation will take place at the Bannan Funeral Home on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the memorial service at 12 noon with Rev. Scott Lawler officiating.
