ALFRED WILLIAM NORDSTRAND

Alfred “Cotton” William Nordstrand, 94, passed away peacefully at 12:30 a.m. just eight days before his 95th birthday. He lived at Glen Eagle retirement community in Traverse City for the past seven years and always proudly introduced himself as “Al from Alpena.” Al served in the United States Army during World War II.

Alfred was born March 13, 1924 in Alpena to the late Alfred and Louise (Zaske) Nordstrand. On June 29, 1968, he married Irene Eller Leeseberg. She preceded him in death on July 8, 2008. Alfred worked as a purchasing agent at Besser Corporation, retiring in 1987. For the next 15 winters he and Irene wintered at the Top of the World in Clearwater, Florida. Al was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. He also was a proud member of the Alpena POOPers Club (People Observing Other People) and was an avid sports fan and enjoyed playing pinochle.

Surviving are his five children, Arthur (Ann) Leeseberg, Carol (Harold) Barr, Joyce (Dale) Domrase, Wayne (Margie) Leeseberg, Phyllis (Ray) Short; 18 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren; sister, Virginia Beaulieu; and sister-in-law, Judy Nordstrand.

Mr. Nordstrand was preceded in death by two brothers, Vernon Nordstrand, Robert Nordstrand; two sons, George Leeseberg, Richard Leeseberg; and two grandchildren.

Visitation will take place on Thursday at Bannan Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. with military honors accorded him at 6 p.m. by Alpena V.F.W. Post 2496. The funeral service will be there on Friday at 1 p.m. with Seminarian Mary Hughes officiating.
