JOAN EDITH MUMFORD

Joan Edith Mumford, age 66, of Alpena, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Monday, Feb. 5, 2018, after a battle with cancer.

On Feb. 1, 1952, Joan was born to the late Victor B. and Nellie M. (Murray) Szatkowski in Alpena, Mich. She married Richard C. Mumford in Charleston, S.C., on March 30, 1973, and together they celebrated 45 beautiful years of marriage. Joan loved being outdoors, taking long walks or bike rides, and occasionally going to the casino. She was a very kind and gentle soul; she had a loving and generous heart, and was always willing to help and provide care for assistance to anyone. Joan volunteered some of her spare time by providing friendship and visiting residents at Tendercare-Alpena a couple of days a week.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Richard; and their two sons, John (Kim) Mumford of Lebanon, Ill., and Christopher (Alison) Mumford of Waterford, Mich.; five grandchildren, Matthew, Kayla, Madison, Nicholas, and Mason; her two sisters, Marie (Michael) Twite and Karen Sylvester both of Alpena, Mich.; six brothers, Victor (Judy) Szatkowski Jr. of Florida, Francis Szatkowski of Alpena, Mich., Larry (Carolyn) Szatkowski of Alpena, Mich., Kenneth Szatkowski of Posen, Mich., Dale Szatkowski of Hubbard Lake, Mich., and James (Treva) Szatkowski of Alpena, Mich.; and also by many loving in-laws, nieces nephews, cousins and a host of lifelong friends.

Joan was preceded in death by her brother, David Szatkowski and two sisters, Nancy Ball, Jeanette Szatkowski; and her sister-in-law Sue Szatkowski.

Per her wishes, she has been taken from the Karpus-Hunter Funeral Home for cremation. Family and friends will gather for memorial visitation on Friday, Feb. 9, 2018, at Karpus-Hunter Funeral Home from 11 a.m. until the Memorial Service begins at 1 p.m. with Pastor Gary Smith officiating at Karpus-Hunter Funeral Home.

Interment: Evergreen Cemetery

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Michigan or MidMichigan Medical Center-Alpena Cancer Center in memory of Joan.
