CAROL NAN MCLENNAN KURZ

Carol Nan McLennan Kurz, “Mickie,” held on to life until she could cradle her youngest great-grandchild in her arms, and then she quietly passed away early Sunday morning Sept. 24, 2017. Carol was born in Rogers City on June 28, 1940, to Donald and Jean McLennan. A congenial, talented, and popular girl, Carol was chosen as the first Limestone Queen (predecessor to Nautical City Queen) in 1958.

After working as a legal secretary in Los Angeles for two years, Carol returned to northern Michigan where she worked first for General Telephone and then at City Hall in Alpena. Carol married John Kurz on Jan. 3, 1981, and they settled in Texas where she spent the next 23 years working for the Killeen Police Department, retiring from that job with commendations for her extraordinary service.

Carol always loved dancing (taught her brothers “the twist”), and was well-known to family and friends for her “heart of gold.”

A resident of Killeen, Texas, Carol is survived by her husband, John; daughter, Shannon Adler; granddaughters Taryn (Patrick) Shuler and Taylor (Andy) Kulik; great-grandchildren Ella and Atlas; siblings Beth (Art) Getzinger, Lyn Petz, Lee (Bob) Bingle, Don (Julie) McLennan and Scott McLennan; as well as dozens of cousins, nephews and nieces.

Preceding Carol in death were her parents, Donald and Jean McLennan, her godson and nephew, Jay Getzinger, her niece, Shelly Petz, and her brother-in-law, Joel Petz.

Services will take place at Heritage Funeral Home in Harper Heights, Texas, at 10 a.m. on Oct. 7, 2017. Revs. Dr. Greg and Karen Zurakowski will conduct a local memorial service at the church of Carol’s baptism, Westminster Presbyterian Church in Rogers City, on Monday, Oct. 2 at 2 p.m. A private “celebration of life” observance will take place next summer when her cremains are returned to northern Michigan.

Memorials to charity of one’s choice.
