Northeast Michigan backs Trump, Rogers
ALPENA — As expected, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Tuesday carried Northeast Michigan, where voters also supported Republican Mike Rogers for the U.S. Senate.
Across Alpena, Presque Isle, Montmorency, and Alcona counties, Trump earned 66% of the vote to Democrat Kamala Harris’ 32%, according to unofficial results released in the wee morning hours on Wednesday.
Third-party candidates split the remaining share of the vote across Northeast Michigan, with Natural Law Party candidate Robert Kennedy Jr. earning the most votes among third-party candidates, at about 0.5%.
Kennedy dropped out of the race in August but lost his effort to have his name removed from Michigan ballots.
Trump’s strongest Northeast Michigan showing came in Montmorency County, where he earned 72% of the vote, followed by Alcona County at about 70% and Alpena and Presque Isle counties each at about 64%.
Trump officially won Michigan about midday Wednesday, beating Harris statewide 50% to 48%.
Nonetheless, Trump won the presidency after claiming Wisconsin early Wednesday morning, putting him over the 270 Electoral College votes needed to return to the White House, meaning he doesn’t need Michigan to win.
Rogers, meanwhile, picked up 65% of Northeast Michigan’s vote to Democrat Elissa Slotkin’s 32%, according to unofficial results from Alpena, Presque Isle, Montmorency, and Alcona counties.
Third-party candidates split the remainder of the vote, with Libertarian Joseph Solis-Mullen leading the pack with more than 1% of the vote.
In Northeast Michigan, Rogers’ strongest showing came in Montmorency County, where he earned 71% of the vote, followed by Alcona County at about 69% and Alpena and Presque Isle counties each at about 63%.
Statewide, Slotkin won the seat after The Associated Press called the race Wednesday afternoon. She takes the open Senate seat being vacated by longtime U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, a Democrat.
