ALPENA ― Police will up their lookout for impaired drivers starting tomorrow during a three-week Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement campaign that runs through Sept. 5.

Police from agencies across the state will be especially vigilant for drivers showing signs of drunk or drugged driving during the weeks leading up to Labor Day weekend, when 11 people died in Michigan crashes last year.

In 2021, nearly 45% of fatalities on Michigan roads involved alcohol or drugs or both, according to the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute, the Michigan State Police reported.

The same year, one person died in an alcohol-involved crash roughly every 24 hours, the MSP reported.

In Michigan, drivers may not drive with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or higher, although police can arrest drivers at any blood alcohol content if they believe the driver is impaired.
