ALPENA – Three juveniles sustained injuries when the off-roading vehicle on which they were riding tipped after it collided with a pickup truck on Lake Winyah Road in Alpena Township today.

The youths sustained minor injuries from the crash, caused when one of the juveniles, driving the ORV, attempted to turn onto High Banks Drive into the path of the oncoming truck.

Paramedics checked the minors, who did not require transport to the hospital. The truck’s driver was not injured in the crash.

Police said youth and inexperience contributed to the crash.

Police have responded to multiple off-roading vehicle crashes in recent weeks, including one in which a Presque Isle County man died on Sunday.

The minors in Wednesday’s crash did not wear helmets. They escaped serious injury when their machine flipped, but the results could have been fatal had the riders been trapped under the vehicle or flung onto the pavement, said Alpena Township Fire Department Chief Mark Hansen, who responded to the incident along with Alpena County Sheriff’s Office deputies.

Arms and legs can be fixed, but “head injuries are sometimes irreversible,” Hansen said.
