Beware white foam, health officials say
ALPENA — Michiganders and visitors should avoid foam on lakes, rivers, and other bodies of water, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services recommended today.
Foam can contain harmful chemicals, including high levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS.
Bright white, lightweight foam piled along shores or blown onto beaches could contain PFAS, which presents health risks for those who come into contact with it, the DHHS said.
Health officials recommend rinsing or bathing after contact with potentially hazardous foam.
Natural foam, without PFAS, usually appears off-white or brown, has an earthy or fishy smell, and tends to pile up in bays, in swirling water, or at river barriers such as dams.
