ALPENA — The Alpena Community College softball team played two hard fought games against Macomb on Friday. The first game ended in a tough loss for the Lumberjacks after falling to Macomb in an 8-5 loss, but bounced back in the second game with a walk-off 4-3 win.

“In the first game we had some fielding errors and that cost us. But in the second game, we put it all together and took the win which was really nice to see,” Alpena coach Christin Sobeck said.

The Lumberjacks got off to a great start in the first game, scoring two runs early in the first inning. Maddy Wilkinson and Jade Schultz were responsible for those runs after hitting back-to-back singles. Both of the runners ended up coming around to score, giving ACC the 2-0 lead.

It didn’t take Macomb long to strike back. The Monarchs answered by recording one run in the second inning and another three runs in the third inning. The Lumberjacks scored three runs in the third inning as well.

Two of the runs were scored by Wilkinson and Schultz, while the other was scored by Mollie Girard, giving ACC the 5-4 lead.

Macomb scored one again during the fifth inning, tying the game at 5-5.

Macomb scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take the lead for good.

“We had six errors in that game and we just have to clean it up. You can’t have that many errors and expect to win, we have to be better,” Sobeck said.

Alpena got off to a spectacular start in game two after Schultz crushed a solo home run deep to left center field giving the Lumberjacks the early lead.

Neither team scored again until the fourth inning when Macomb racked up two runs, giving the Monarchs momentum and a 2-1 lead.

ACC proved it could fight back when Aubree Sheldon hit a double, which later came around to score tying up the game 2-2.

Macomb came back with another run in the top of the sixth inning, but so did ACC after it responded with another run of its own tying the game up again.

Entering the last inning the Lumberjacks only needed one run in order to walk it off and win it. They did just that when Maddy Wilkinson walked and ended up scoring the game-winning run after being driven in by a RBI single by Girard.

Schultz was the highlight player on Friday after pitching two complete games and had a great night at the plate.

“Jade has made some great adjustments at the plate which is really important and she has had a solid second half of the season so far,” Sobeck said.
