WITH VIDEO: Detloff’s tree chosen as city Christmas tree
ALPENA — When visitors to Culligan Plaza see this year’s Christmas tree, many of them should recognize it instantly.
The city chose a tree from Frank Detloff’s 5th Avenue property and cut it down on Friday morning.
Over the weekend, it will get cleaned up and trimmed in preparation for installation on Tuesday. The tree will stand 35 feet tall and 19 feet wide in the fountain at the corner of Chisholm Street and 2nd Avenue.
It will be decorated with somewhere between 9,000 and 10,000 lights to be lit for the first time during the annual holiday parade in downtown Alpena.

“Frank told me, ‘Everyone in town is going to say, that’s Frank Detloff’s tree,'” Frank’s brother Paul said.
Frank, who has owned the house that the tree was taken from since 1988, is currently a resident at Sally’s Care Home, but Paul said his brother is very excited. The tree has never been decorated before Paul said and he’s excited to see what it looks like once it’s covered in lights.
Bill Papke has lived across the street for 18 years. He said that it will be strange not seeing the tree outside of his window, but thinks that it will look great decorated in the middle of town.
Nancy Burnham lives next door to Detloff’s home and was delighted to find out why such a beautiful tree was being cut down.
Paul and some neighbors said the city came around three or four times evaluating the tree before asking Frank if they could use it for the city’s Christmas tree.
City Engineer Steve Shultz said he appreciates the homeowner, on behalf of the City of Alpena, for donating the tree.
