ALPENA — First Federal of Northern Michigan (FFNM) Legacy Foundation presented a $2,000 check to the Grand Lake Community Chapel as one of their second quarter grant recipients. The $2,000 will be used towards their God Loves You Food Pantry’s Presque Isle Kids Day.

Grand Lake Community Chapel’s God Loves You Food Pantry is headquartered in Presque Isle. The pantry was establish in March 2012 to provide groceries to local families in need. They have expanded to operate food distributions in both Presque Isle and Posen townships and serve an average of 600 to 1,000 families monthly. Rev. Giovanna Meek, President of the Food Pantry, welcomes all people in need. “Northeastern Michigan is home to many hardy, humble people that don’t feel worthy of receiving free food. Yet, they are in need of food. We want to reach those people.” Meek has been trying to remove the social stigma of receiving food from a Pantry. “It is not for us to judge someone else’s station in life by what car they drive or other outward appearances. Everyone is welcome!” The Pantry’s goal is to provide “food and welcome” to anyone that comes to receive.

They are now looking to expand and meet the unmet needs of the children in the Presque Isle and surrounding communities by providing a Presque Isle Kids Day that will offer onsite fun and interactive learning activities as well as food and books for the children to take home. The date of the event has not been confirmed as of the date of this press release.
