ALPENA — The Alpena Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire at about 3:24 p.m. Tuesday at 2443 Long Lake Ave. Crews arrived to find a Ford Ranger pickup smoldering outside the business and extinguished the fire around 3:40 p.m. No one was injured in the fire.

Fire Chief Bill Forbush said workers were removing the battery, which caused a spark under the hood, igniting the fire. He said the vehicle was being prepared to be scrapped later today. Forbush said company workers used an endloader to remove the truck from the building, preventing damage to the structure. Company workers also dumped a pile of sand on the vehicle to help extinguish the fire. Forbush said the fire was accidental in nature.
