School board roundup: Rogers City streamlines sports tickets
∫ The Rogers City Area Schools Board of Education earlier this month streamlined ticket prices for student athletics. Students can attend athletic events at no charge, while the public will pay $5 per person, no more than $15 per family.
The school board also voted to raise the price of school meals by 10 cents. Breakfast will now cost $1.90 per student and lunch will now cost $2.95. The price of milk will remain the same. So will the cost of reduced-price meals for eligible students.
∫ The Alpena-Montmorency-Alcona Educational Service District Board of Education agreed on Thursday to give Superintendent Scott Reynolds merit pay if he completes a comprehensive communication plan for the district by March 1. The superintendent’s contract allows Reynolds to receive merit pay when he completes a specific, time-bound objective.
The board also gave raises to substitute teachers, paraprofessionals, and support staff. Substitute teachers will receive a $30 increase to $130 for a full day or a $15 increase to $65 for a half-day. Paraprofessionals will receive a $1.75 per hour increase to $13.25 per hour and support staff will receive a $1.75 per hour increase to $12.25 per hour.
Additionally, the board hired Alpena resident Erica Jones as a new speech therapist. Jones holds a master’s degree in speech pathology and audiology from the University of Iowa.
∫ The Hillman Community Schools Board of Education last week approved a one-year contract with the Hillman Education Association, which represents the district’s teachers, according to board President Kelly Burwell. The contract does not include a pay raise or changes in insurance.
The board also accepted four resignations and hired one new position last week. Resigning from the district are Jeffrey Thomas, junior and senior high social studies teacher, Jamie Karshina, junior and senior high math and English teacher, Gina Robertson, the junior high Science Olympiad coach, and bus driver Donald Rahn. Lisa Benac-Appelgren was hired as the junior varsity volleyball coach.
