Rainfall record clobbered on Sunday

ALPENA — Nearly four inches of rain fell on Alpena during a string of severe storms on Sunday, clobbering a 60-year-old record.

The National Weather Service reported 3.59 inches of rainfall on Sunday, more than an inch above the 2.34-inch record for the date set on July 26, 1960.

The typical rainfall for the date is less than an inch, and only trace amounts fell on July 26, 2019, according to the Weather Service.

So far, more than eight inches of rain have fallen in July, compared to the 2.55 inches that is typical for July, and nearly 22 inches have fallen for the year so far, compared to the roughly 15 inches that is normal.

Sunday’s storms prompted the county to sound the emergency alert system, but no major damage was reported.

The weather is expected to be dry and cool the rest of the week, with a slight chance of rain tonight but otherwise mostly sunny conditions and highs not expected to break 80 degrees until perhaps Saturday.
