A roundup of recent actions by local government boards

∫ The Alpena Municipal Council approved a three-year contract with Berg Assessing and Consulting to continue assessing duties for the city. It is a three-year deal with three option years. The city will pay Berg’s $84,996 in the first two years of the deal and $88,329 in the final year of the contract.

The council also modified its contract with MacArthur Construction from $105,000, which was for a project near Miller Street, to $124,925 for the sanitary sewer reconstruction in the alley between McKinley Avenue and Fair Street extended parallel with Washington Avenue.

The council also voted to spend $63,204 for security improvements at the Public Works Service Center, Water Utility Office and City Hall. Details on what kind of work will be done was not discussed because of the possible safety impact it could have on employees.

∫ The Alpena County Board of Commissioners voted to increase the amount it pays its vendor for inmate meals at the jail. The county was paying $2.55 per plate, but increased to $2.85.

The board also voted to allow Airport Manager Steve Smigelski to hire an assistant manager to work at the Alpena County Regional Airport. The position will be funded by money the airport received from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act.

The board also voted to apply to the Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan for grants to purchase a trailer to store COVID-19 items and for other Emergency Operation Center uses and to buy a sand-bagging machine.

The board also approved a 12-month contract with Jeanette Tolan for website maintenance at a cost of $1,000 per month.

The board set a deadline of noon on the Monday preceding the county board’s Finance Committee meetings to have items placed on the meeting agenda.

∫ The Presque Isle County Board of Commissioners voted to allow the county’s maintenance supervisor to spend up to $2,250 to JLK Engineering for a site plan for heating and cooling and plumbing at the county courthouse and Sheriff’s Office.

The board also rescinded the county’s COVID-19 Preparedness and Response Plan and voted to instead follow the recommending guidelines of Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The board instituted a policy that no employee of Presque Isle County shall confront another employee or member of the public while at work regarding the wearing or not wearing of a mask

The board also approved a contract with Michigan Department of Transportation for crack sealing and airfield remarking at the Presque Isle County Airport in Rogers City.
