Alpena wants schools chief who can listen

ALPENA — Alpena Public Schools teachers, staff, and community want a leader who listens and seeks input, can spend voter-approved bond dollars wisely, and can keep the district moving forward, according to survey results reviewed on Wednesday by the Alpena school board.

Respondents also want the next superintendent to hold a master’s degree and have administrative experience.

The survey results will help trustees hone the job description and interview questions for the district’s next superintendent.

Superintendent John VanWagoner will leave Alpena next week to become superintendent at Traverse City Area Public Schools. Susan Wooden, a retired Beaverton Schools superintendent, will serve as interim superintendent until a permanent replacement is picked this fall.

Voters earlier this year approved the sale of $33.9 million in bonds to raise money for facilities improvements throughout the district.

The board’s next workshop related to the superintendent search is scheduled for 6 p.m. Aug. 20.
