ALPENA — Fresh off the heels of Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announcing many businesses in Northeast Michigan will be allowed to reopen, District Health Departments No. 4 and No. 2 announced no changes in the number of area residents infected with COVID-19, and no new deaths.

The number of infected Alpena County residents remained at 91, Presque Isle County residents 11, Montmorency County residents five, and Alcona County residents six.

So far, nine Alpena County residents have died while infected and one Alcona County resident has died.

Statewide, 51,142 Michiganders have been found to be infected with COVID-19. Of those, 4,891 have died, and, as of May 15, 28,234 have recovered, according to state data.

On Monday, Whitmer proclaimed the coronavirus situation in northern Michigan was improving and signed an executive order that allows retail businesses, bars and restaurants to reopen Friday, with certain precautions in place as spelled out by the state.
