ALPENA — More recovered Alpena-area residents were reported today by officials tracking the spread of COVID-19, the sickness caused by the coronavirus.

A total of 17 area residents are now classified as recovered, up from only six as of Friday.

Recovery — reported when an infected person has lived 30 days since either the onset of COVID-19 symptoms or testing positive — was reported in 11 residents of Alpena County, up from only one recovered case on Friday.

Another recovered resident of Montmorency County brought that county’s total to three recovered, in addition to the two recovered cases in Presque Isle County and one in Alcona County previously reported.

One new positive test in an Alpena County resident, reported yesterday, brought that county’s total to 91 and the region’s total positive tests to 113.

Of the 899 tests administered to residents of Alpena, Alcona, Montmorency, and Presque Isle counties, 727 have been negative, and 59 are still pending.

Local health departments also report 12 probable cases of COVID-19, four in Alcona County and eight in Alpena County.

Probable cases of COVID-19 are defined as individuals who have been directly linked to a confirmed case and have symptoms consistent with COVID-19, but who were not tested. Such individuals are already quarantined when symptoms appear and treated as if they are a positive, health officials say.

* Deaths in people infected with COVID-19: nine from Alpena County and one from Alcona County.

* Positive tests: 11 Presque Isle County residents, five Montmorency County residents, and six Alcona County residents, in addition to the 91 Alpena County residents.

Statewide, 51,142 Michiganders have been found to be infected with COVID-19. Of those, 4,891 have died, and, as of May 15, 28,234 have recovered, according to state data.
