News wins 4 Michigan AP awards

ALPENA — The Michigan Associated Press contest winners were announced Thursday and the entire editorial staff of The Alpena News won a first-place award in the Enterprise Reporting for their series, “Caring for Northeast Michigan.”

All News reporters contributed to that series exploring the challenges of providing timely, quality health care in rural Northeast Michigan.

The editorial staff also took third place in Enterprise Reporting for the series “This Is Us,” a look at how the changing economy in Northeast Michigan is changing the way of life of its residents.

“The Alpena News knows how to do enterprise and clearly has made it a priority,” one judge commented.

In addition:

∫ News staffer Julie Goldberg won a first-place award in Investigative Reporting for her story, “Our kids were at risk,” a piece that revealed Hillman schools had hired a substitute teacher while aware the teacher had been fired in Alpena over allegations of an improper relationship with a student.

∫ Sports writer Jonny Zawacki took a third place in the Best Sports Feature Story category for his story, “Wildcat hockey team has special pair of super fans,” a profile of dedicated puck-watchers Kevin West and Cynthia Taylor .

∫ Also, a former sports stringer at The News, Austin Hemmingson, now with the Escanaba Daily Press, won a third-place award in the Best Sports Column category.
