BREAKING: Carmeuse employee test result is negative

The coronavirus test results came back negative today for the employee at Carmeuse Lime and Stone’s operation in Rogers City, company spokesman Kevin Whyte said in an email.

The employee and one other plant employee worked alongside a contractor that was previously on site at the Presque Isle plant. The contractor had since tested positive for coronavirus in Canada. The contractor was on site between March 9 and March 11.

Whyte previously told The News, the second employee was denied testing at the site because the rules for testing had just changed and the employee was not in health care, emergency medical services, not over the age of 60 or in critical condition.

Other employees were asked to self-quarantine after coming into contact with the two employees who had worked with the infected contractor.

Whyte said there were 35 Carmeuse employees in self-quarantine as of Tuesday.

“They will be called back to work in the near future per Department of Health guidelines,” Whyte said.
