Alpena staffers win 4 awards in Michigan AP contest

The Michigan Associated Press contest winners were announced today and the entire editorial staff of The Alpena News won a first place award in enterprise reporting for their series on “Caring for Northeast Michigan.”

In addition, news staffer Julie Goldberg won a first place award in investigative reporting for her story “Our Kids Were At Risk.”

The editorial staff of the newspaper also took a third place award in enterprise reporting for the series “This is Us.”

In discussing the enterprise reporting first and third places, one judge commented “The Alpena News knows how to do enterprise and clearly has made it a priority.”

Sports Writer Jonny Zawacki took a third place in the Best Sports Feature Story category for his story “Wildcat Hockey Team has Special Pair of Super Fans.”

Also a former sports stringer at The Alpena News – Austin Hemmingson – now with the Escanaba Daily Press, won a third place award in the Best Sports Column category.
