ALPENA — Two drinking water wells near the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center have levels of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances, also known as PFAS, that are above proposed state safety standards, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said today.

That is consistent with previous tests performed by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, DHHS said. Homeowners with PFAS in their drinking water are offered filters.

In total, owners of 71 of 124 wells that had been previously tested agreed to have their drinking water retested, DHHS said. Of those 71, no PFAS was found in 52 wells and 19 wells had levels of PFAS that were below the federal safety standard of 70 parts per trillion. The proposed state standard is 10 ppt, and two of those 19 wells with some PFAS showed levels above that proposed standard.

Residents who have questions about their results can call DHHS at 800-648-6942. For more information about the PFAS response near the Alpena CRTC or in other areas of Michigan, visit Michigan.gov/PFASResponse.
