House fire early Saturday morning leaves no injuries

No one was injured but two cats died in a house fire early Saturday morning on Clinton Street.

Firefighters with the Alpena Fire Department were dispatched at 2:45 a.m. and arrived to find the back of the home heavily involved in fire, according to an email from Fire Chief Bill Forbush.

Both occupants exited the home and were safe.

The resident told firefighters he reloads ammunition and a lamp used to keep supplies dry may have ignited some gunpowder.

The fire caused significant damage to the home and to a vehicle in the driveway and off-duty crews were called in to aid on-duty crews. Firefighters cleared the scene just after 5 p.m.

Crews were assisted on scene by Alpena Power, Suez Water and Alpena Police.
